The steppes of the Campo de Belchite region have two protected areas: the Wildlife Refuge of La Lomaza and the Ornithological Reserve of El Planerón. This route allows you to cover a good part of both steppe areas on a fairly flat route, suitable for gravel biking.
After crossing Codo, leave the town to the north and, before reaching El Planerón, turn west. Cross the A-222 road (attention required!) and continue towards Puebla de Albortón. After crossing the Belchite road again, you will reach the area around La Lomaza and La Pedriza, interesting geological formations that border the plain. The return to Codo is made crossing the Planerón along trails in excellent condition.
It is essential to carry water. The only fountains on the route are in Codo and Puebla de Albortón.
Avoid days of cierzo (strong wind from the west) and where you might experience too much sun exposure (e.g. maximum summer sun)
Avoid making loud noises and disturbing wildlife; the route crosses a protected area for birds.
